International Barents Secretariat and Arctic Centre renew the Barents Information contract

International Barents Secretariat (IBS) in Kirkenes, Norway and the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland have signed a contract on information and data management and dissemination within the Barents Euro-Arctic Cooperation.

The cooperation was supported by the Barents Region Committee of Senior Officials meeting in Jokkmokk in early February. The contract covers years 2012-2015. First contract period was years 2008-2011.

According to the contract IBS and Arctic Centre implement in cooperation a general information and data management strategy for the Barents cooperation with a view to improve the information dissemination. One goal of the strategy is to improve the flow of information to the general public.

Arctic Centre also hosts and maintains the beac.st and Barentsinfo.org websites. Beac.st contains official information for authorities and decision making. Barentsinfo.org contains general information for the public and serves as a platform where Barents related projects can publish information.

Basing on this cooperation but with a separate contract with NEFCO (Nordic Environment Finance Corporation) Arctic Centre is also currently developing a technical platform to serve needs of the information system for Barents environmental “Hot Spots”.
