Junior researchers in the doctoral programme Communities and changing work

Two junior researchers have been appointed in the doctoral programme Communities and changing work. The appointees are M.Ed. Eliisa Leskisenoja and M.Soc.Sc. Hanna Peltomaa.

There were altogether 29 applicants for the two vacant junior researcher’s positions. The successful candidates for the positons are M.Soc.Sc. Hanna Peltomaa, placement in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and M.Ed. Eliisa Leskisenoja, placement in the Faculty of Education. Hanna Peltomaa obtained her master’s degree in social sciences (majoring in sociology) at the University of Lapland in 2004. Eliisa Leskisenoja got her master’s degree in education (class teacher) at the University of Turku in 1997.


The executive committee of the doctoral programme was given the responsibility of evaluating the applicants’ merits for the vacant positions. The members of the committee are professor Mirja Hiltunen, professor Jaana Paanetoja, professor Anneli Pohjola, professor Antti Syväjärvi, professor Raimo Rajala, and professor Markku Vieru. The chair of the committee in the selection process was professor Antti Syväjärvi. Administrative manager Kaisa Kangas served as the secretary.

The executive committee evaluated the applicants’ research plans in view of feasibility, quality, innovativeness, and the relevance to themes of the doctoral programme. In addition, the doctoral programme considered the applicants’ other merits supporting the duties of the position.

Communities and changing work is one of the three thematic doctoral programmes at the University of Lapland. The background of the doctoral programme Communities and changing work is characterised by changes in the society and their effect on communities in the areas of science and art. Themes of the doctoral programme include all topics relevant to changes in public and private communities, work, and working environment. The themes focus on specific characteristics in the northern region.

The Graduate School at the University of Lapland is also home to the doctoral programmes Culture-centred service design, and Northern cultures and sustainable natural resource politics.

The recruitment process has also resulted in some applicants becoming appointed for status positions. The status position holders can also participate in teaching given in the doctoral programmes of the Graduate School.
