Maria Huhmarniemi, University Lecturer at the University of Lapland, has been awarded the title of Docent of Social Pedagogy, especially Community Based Art Education, at the University of Eastern Finland on 17 January 2022.
According to the University of Eastern Finland, Huhmarniemi broadens interpretations on inclusion through art. She expands the definitions of inclusion toward belonging to the world, helping to transcend the dividing line of modern ways of thinking between culture and nature. From the perspective of social pedagogy, Huhmarniemi’s contribution is crystallized in Paulo Freire’s idea: I do not believe in loving among women and men, among human beings, if we do not become capable of loving the world. Such a need for planetary thinking and worldview transformation is evident in modern times.
Huhmarniemi holds a Master of Arts (2002) and a Doctor of Arts (2016) degree from the University of Lapland. She has also completed additional studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2010 and at the University of Nottingham Trent in 1999 (Department of Photography).
Huhmarniemi has held her current position as a university lecturer at the University of Lapland since 2004. She has previously worked as a project coordinator and part-time teacher at the University of Lapland in 2002–2004.
