The Communications Office of the University of Lapland has launched a new English-language University Magazine. The first Latitude – University of Lapland Magazine appeared in December 2010, and it will appear once a year every autumn.
Latitude – University of Lapland Magazine presents the University’s
strategic expertise to international stakeholders in an interesting and
relaxed way. It seeks to reflect our distinctive features: an
international community which offers various forms of cooperation and
room for critical debate.
The first issue highlights the encounter of the global and the local in
the North through Arctic indigenous peoples, foreign berry pickers and
the rise of local culture, among others. Besides the theme articles, the
magazine includes a rich repertoire of topics covering studying,
research, know-how, and the brisk way of life in the North.
The magazine is aimed particularly at the international partners and
stakeholders of the University, such as teachers, researchers, companies
and organizations, as well as our international students and alumni.
The concept and publication design were realized by managing editor Sari
Väyrynen and AD Niina Huuskonen from the Communications Office. The
editorial board includes Olli Tiuraniemi (Editor-in-Chief), Sari
Väyrynen (Managing Editor), Laura Junka-Aikio (Theme Sub-editor), Niina
Huuskonen (AD), Richard Foley (Translator and English Consultant),
Markku Heikkilä and Outi Snellman. In addition, a number of freelance
writers and photographers have given a significant contribution to the
implementation of the magazine.
The magazine is distributed free of charge to the University’s
international guests, and the University staff may bring it to their
international partners on visits. In addition, the magazine is available at
