Juuso Voutilainen (Finland):
"I remember watching in awe the magnificent shapes and forms the Northern Lights may take across the sky. For some people the Northern Lights are so common that they fail to appreciate them, but I still find them magnificent and interesting."
The Aurora Borealis exhibition presents photographs and videos related to northern lights from eight students of the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland. The students are exchange students from France, Israel and Croatia, and Finnish degree students.
The idea for the exhibition came from Ana Krmek who is a Croatian exchange student currently at the University of Lapland. Ms Krmek’s home institution is in Slovenia but she is currently studying audiovisual media culture on her exchange at the University of Lapland. Among other things, the exhibition aims to connect local and exchange students.
A quote from the photographer is provided below each of the 26 photographs in the exhibition. While observing the photographs and reading the quotes, the visitor can sense differences in the ways the Aurora Borealis are appreciated by foreign students, who experienced the Aurora Borealis for the first time, and those who have lived in the North for a long time.

"I remember coming out of the sauna and quickly ran to get my camera and tripod, probably the most beautiful moment in a life."

Jan Heinonen: Alone Again
The photographs in the Last Beach exhibition by photographic artist Jan Heinonen were taken a couple of years ago, when he was a visiting artist in Iceland.
"Nature has meant something special to me ever since I was a child. When I close my eyes I go back to my childhood on the beaches, and the silence is perfect", describes Heinonen.
With a subtle minimalistic approach, artist Jan Heinonen explores the dynamics of nature. His works establish a link between the nature's reality and nature imagined by its conceiver. Jan Heinonen is finishing his Master's degree in Administrative Sciences at the University of Tampere. He has also studied art history at the University of Helsinki and art studies at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
The sound world at the exhibition is designed by composer Ari Taskinen.
