New publication on the history of Sámi education in Finland

15.12.2014

A book on the history of Sámi education and schools in Finland (Saamalaisten kansanopetuksen ja koulunkäynnin historia Suomessa) has been published recently. It is the first comprehensive work dealing with the history of Sámi schools and the position of Sámi education in the Finnish school system.

Published by the Institute of Migration, the book is a rich source of information about education in Finland targeted at the Sámi from the time of the first church activities through the era of nationalism in the 19th century up to the present day.

The articles of the book are based on archival and reference materials as well as on the experiences of Sámi people, school administrators, and educators. The topics discussed include the way in which the Finnish educational policy has changed from assimilation into revitalizing the Sámi language and culture.

The book contains articles by 27 contributors who all are specialized in Sámi education and schooling. According to the authors, the school-historical perspective is beneficial in examining the time when there has been a growing interest in the development of inter-cultural relationships.

The book is aimed at everyone interested in the history of Sámi education and schools.
