NordForsk funds research on the democratic participation of the Sámi people in the energy transition

18.6.2024

The research project led by Professor Rauna Kuokkanen has received significant funding from NordForsk. The project examines the Sámi's democratic participation in the energy transition.

NordForsk funds the research project “Sámi democratic engagement in the energy transition: advancing justice, legitimacy and participatory governance” from its Green Transition program. The funding of the project is NOK 15 million.

The project examines the democratic participation of the Sámi people in the ongoing energy transition in the Nordic countries and the legitimacy of the transition from the perspective of the Sámi people. The main goal of the project is to understand what "just transition" means from the perspective of the Sámi people and to find out strategies and best practices that promote the democratic participation of the Sámi people.

– The project deals with the democratic deficit observed in the Nordic countries in the participation of the Sami people in resource development projects and legislative measures, says Professor Rauna Kuokkanen.

Research partners are Kaisa Raitio (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet) and Andrei Marin (Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet).
