Professor Kaarina Määttä’s book "Obsessed with Doctoral Theses – Supervision and Support during the Dissertation Process” is published in English. The purpose of the book is to support prospective doctorates and their supervisors and other supporters.
In this book, the phases of dissertation and the supervision and support that are needed in the different phases are introduced. The most interesting offering of the book is perhaps the newly-graduated doctors’ descriptions of how their doctoral theses sprang up and what the whole process required.
“The dissertation process is an unforgettable and special phase of life to everyone, and the personal experiences of the dissertation process are often not discussed in the academic world”, says Professor Kaarina Määttä.
All authors in the book either live in Lapland or work in close co-operation with the University of Lapland. In addition to the doctorates’ and their spouses’ stories, the book also includes professors’ articles about the special issues in the supervision of doctoral theses. In her own article, Kaarina Määttä concretizes the pedagogy of supervising doctoral theses.
Few books about the dissertation process have been published, at least not ones revealing personal experiences as openly as this book does – and there could not be as there have not been enough describers. Now, since the number of doctors has increased in Finland and internationally, help, advice, information, and understanding about how to write a doctoral thesis as well as how to supervise this process are greatly needed.
“This book also brings visibility to the University of Lapland and strengthens the university’s role as a significant research community. Moreover, the book improves the attractiveness of Lapland as an internationally interesting research and cultural environment”, concludes Professor Määttä.
This book is aimed at doctoral students and their professors as well as everyone who is somehow connected to the dissertation process.
The book is translated by Dr. Satu Uusiautti who works as a researcher and coordinator in a research project called Love-based Leadership – an Interdisciplinary Approach at the Faculty of Education, University of Lapland. The book is published by Sense Publishers.
