Tuija Turunen, Professor of Education at the University of Lapland, has been appointed a member of the UArctic Academic Advisory Board.
The UArctic Academic Advisory Board (MIMIR) is UArctic's high-level strategic, advisory body. Its membership consists of 6–12 UArctic Chair researchers. The UArctic Chair is a distinguished scholar nominated by UArctic to serve as an academic leader for the Arctic region.
Tuija Turunen has served as UArctic Chair since 2022, and she has led the network for UArctic Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity from its inception in 2015 until June 2024. In her work, Turunen has highlighted the importance of sustainability, education and international cooperation in the Arctic.
"I want to strengthen the capacities of local communities and promote interdisciplinary cooperation. Membership of MIMIR provides an important platform for this work. It also provides an opportunity to support development and research work that increases well-being and builds a sustainable future, supporting communities", says Turunen.
In addition to Turunen, Karl Kreutz (UArctic Chair in Arctic Ice, Climate, and Environmental History) and Philip Steinberg (UArctic Chair in Political Geopgrahy) were appointed as new members.
