Publication on Barents visual arts in the 1970s and 1980s

12.12.2014

The recent history of Northern visual arts is discussed in a new publication authored by art professionals and art researchers from the North Calotte. The book focuses on visual arts and cultural heritage of the 1970s and 1980s – the time when official international cooperation between the countries of the Barents region has not started yet and when Northern visual arts and artists were still not well known regionally and internationally.

The authors of Northern Beauty. Barents Visual Arts in the 1970s and the 1980s discuss art by examining issues such as the type of visual artwork produced in the northern regions, the artists who were active at that time, the kind of art styles they represented, and the international trends which influenced the northern visual arts. In addition, the book tells us what it was like to work as a visual artist in the North, how the geographically remote location influenced art and created opportunities, and what type of cross-border cooperation there was between artists.

The publication is one of the outcomes of the international "Northern Beauty. Barents Visual Arts in the 1970s and the 1980s" project funded by the European Union, the Kolarctic ENPI CBC programme, and national funding programmes. The publication summarises the art-historical research results of the project. The primary objective of the project has been to establish cooperation between arts and cultural institutions across the Barents region. The cooperation network has included the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland, the Regional Office of Lapland of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Kemi Art Museum (Finland), the Art Gallery in Luleå (Sweden), the Sámi Center for Contemporary Art in Karasjok (Norway), and the Murmansk Regional Art Museum (Russia).

The publication is edited by University Teacher, Researcher Jonna Katajamäki from the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland. The book contains articles by Professor of Art History Tuija Hautala-Hirvioja (University of Lapland); Jonna Katajamäki; Professor, Director Kari Laine (Thule Institute, University of Oulu); Director Jan-Erik Lundström (Norrbottens Museum); Svetlana Romanova (former Deputy Director for Research at the Murmansk Regional Art Museum); and Artist, Art Educator, Art Critic Bertil Sundstedt (Luleå, Sweden).
