REFLECTIONS - the game of the shadows
8.2.2011
An installation by Eija Timonen and Bettina Schülke
“Reflections – the game of the shadows” is a collage of paper cut-outs,
textile printings and knitting installations. The thematic comes from
abstract images of water in its different forms; from frozen to melted
water, from still to running water. On the surface of the water the
shadows play their game. Most of the images have been taken in Northern
Finland, where the rapid changes of seasons dominate the changes of
light.
The shapes of the black and white paper cut-outs have transformed into
colourful textile printings, and this transformation process led to the
knitting installation. As a consequence, the collage is characterized by
the metamorphosis of the almost minimalistic expression of the original
black and white images into a colourful dance on the textile. Th e
lights and shadows are never stable on the collage – like they are never
stable in the Northern nature, where the four seasons with dark winters
and midnight summer sun dominate their existence.
