Research workshop on elderly and Arctic change in Umeå

A research team from the University of Lapland will participate at the workshop “Elderly & Arctic Change” to be held in Umeå, Sweden on December 11–12. The workshop brings together scholars from multidisciplinary backgrounds to initiate dialogues and discussions on various issues concerning elderly in the Arctic.
The workshop
will particularly highlight human rights, gender dimensions, indigenous
elderly, as well as the challenges elderly encounter due to the
environmental change in the Arctic.
The team includes Professor
Päivi Naskali, Professor Marjaana Seppänen, Lecturer Seija
Keskitalo-Foley and Researcher Shahnaj Begum. Other workshop
participants will come from NORUT Northern Research Institute,
University of Tromsø, Norway; Universitiy of Umeå, Sweden; Northern
Arctic Federal University (NArFU) (Arkhangelsk), Russia; Murmansk
Humanities Institute, Russia; University of Dalhousie, Canada;
University of Helsinki and Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences,
Finland.
Keynote speakers include Rasmus Ole Rasmussen
(Population & Environmental Change in the Arctic), Joan Harbison
(Human Rights and Gender) and Marianne Liliequist (Inclusion/Exclusion
& Indigenious Perspective). The workshop includes also a panel
discussion with participation of the representatives of the elderly
indigenous people, as well as the inauguration ceremony of a new Arctic
Research Centre (ARCUM) at the University of Umeå.
The workshop
is a part of activities of the Arctic Change project coordinated by the
University of Lapland and funded by NORDREGIO within the Arctic
Cooperation Programme (2012–2014). The workshop is organized in
collaboration with the University of Umeå.
