Research workshop on the Arctic change and older people in Tromsø

A research team from the University of Lapland will participate at the workshop “Elderly & Arctic Change” to be held in Tromsø, Norway on September 10–11, 2013. The workshop brings together scholars from multidisciplinary background to initiate conversations and discussions on different issues concerning older people in the Arctic.
The
workshop will particularly highlight older people’s inclusion and
exclusion, gender dimensions, health-illness-care-right as well as the
challenges elderly encounter due to the environmental change in the
Arctic.
The research group includes Professor Päivi Naskali,
Professor Marjaana Seppänen, University Lecturer Seija Keskitalo-Foley,
Researcher Shahnaj Begum and student Esther Dorsman. Other workshop
participants will come from NORUT Northern Research Institute,
University of Tromsø, Norway; Umeå University, Sweden; Northern Arctic
Federal University (NArFU) (Arkhangelsk), Russia; Murmansk Humanities
Institute, Russia; University of Dalhousie, Canada; University of
Helsinki and Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences, Finland.
The
workshop includes keynote speakers Joan Harbison (Human Rights and
Gender) from the University of Dalhousie, Canada and Mona Anita Kiil
from the University of Tromsø, Norway (Age and Gender), as well as three
parallel sessions based on project’s main themes.
The workshop
is a part of activities of the Arctic Change project coordinated by the
University of Lapland and funded by NORDREGIO within the Arctic
Cooperation Programme (2012–2014). This workshop is also partially
supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Helsinki. The workshop is
organized in collaboration with the University of Tromsø/NORUT.
