The Finnish Service Alliance’s “Service Thesis Award of the Year 2019 was awarded to M.Soc.Sc. (Tourism Research) Ivan Fesenko for his master thesis “Sensory dimension of tourist experiencescape: role of sounds in winter husky dog-sledding experiences in Finnish Lapland”.

Fesenko received the award at the Service Research Seminar held at Aalto University, Helsinki on November 25th, 2019. The thesis was supervised by Senior Lecturer José-Carlos Garcia-Rosell.

Finnish Service Alliance’s Service Thesis of the Year Award is awarded to a university or university of applied sciences graduate who has completed a distinguished Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. The evaluation of the award emphasizes the scientific and practical quality of the thesis and its importance for the renewal of service research.

“The Finnish Service Alliance’s Service Thesis Award of the Year 2019 goes to a master thesis, which is innovative, original and multidisciplinary. The thesis successfully builds bridges across multiple academic discussions. It constructs a theoretical framework combining multidisciplinary tourism research, including experience economy, servicescape, and human-nature relationship; with soundscape studies. The methodological approach applied in this thesis is also innovative, since it combines the use of semi-structured interviews with sound walks. Therefore, apart from its importance for the renewal of service research, the thesis is both scientifically and practically significant considering the growing interest in understanding the role of human senses in the creation of knowledge, experience, value and meaning in a service context.”
