On Thursday 27th November the first movieShamans of Four Nations (1977) takes overview of the shamans in Siberia. The second movie Way to the Upper World (2006) is documentary on a Kirghiz Shamanic ritual in Xinjiang, China.

On Friday 29th November the first movie Memory of a Festival Nomad – a film to the memory of Heimo Lappalainen (2004) is about Finnish filmmaker, author and anthropologist, who were famous for his documentaries. Shamans: Past and Present (1994) is 2-part movie. The first part is a general outline of the history of shamanism by using old pictures, photos and films, which have never been published. The second part is dedicated the contemporary forms of shamanism.

The Film Evenings will be arranged in Polarium in the Arktikum House, Pohjoisranta 4 at 5 PM. The movies are free of charge. The language of the films is English.

Seminar registrations by 21st November
The main themes in the seminar examine the important role art plays in ceremony, ritual, healing, trance, and the transmission of culture in indigenous societies. The main aims of the event focus on examining the relationship between shamanic art, its importance and continuity within both historical as well as contemporary societies, and the function of symbolism within this context. Shamanism, Symbolism and Culture seminar is open for all interested.
