The second issue of a new academic journal Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics is published. The new journal consists of multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and presentations of young scholars and their Barents related research.
The articles of the new issue touch upon social sustainability in the Barents Region from different viewpoints.
–
An emphasis on social sustainability is the only way to realize
sustainable development. Increasing interest in social sustainability is
a trend of the last decade, in contrast to the times when more
attention was paid to the environmental or economic aspects of
sustainable development, says editor-in-chief for the issue Larissa
Riabova. She is the Head of Department of Social Policy in the North,
the Luzin Institute for Economic Studies of the Kola Science Centre of
the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The journal has circulating
editorship. First issue was under the responsibility of the Arctic
Centre at the University of Lapland and Barents Institute. UiT, the
Arctic University of Norway, will be in charge of the third issue. In
addition to the academic issues of the journal, there will be one
popularized supplement issue published this year.
The journal
was established in a cooperation project by three research institutions
and it is funded by the EU Kolarctic ENPI CBC Programme which promotes
cross-border cooperation between the countries in the North Calotte and
northwest Russia.
The new issue is published in printed as well
as in electronic format and it is free of charge. Access to the
electronic version of the journal: www.barentsinfo.org/barentsstudies
