The Chairman of the Chinese CPPCC National Committee, Yu Zhengsheng visited the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland in early June. Chairman Yu Zhengsheng and his delegation got to know the Arktikum Science Centre and the new Aurora Borealis exhibition as well as the Provincial Museum of Lapland.
At the Arctic Centre, the guests were hosted by Rector of the University of Lapland, Mauri Ylä-Kotola, and Research Professor, Director of the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law, Timo Koivurova. Professor Koivurova substituted for Director of the Arctic Centre, Paula Kankaanpää who was at the same time travelling from the meeting with the President of Iceland to Shanghai, China, to an arctic co-operation seminar.
“The discussion focused especially on the multidisciplinary arctic research and the growing importance of the arctic region”, notes Rector Ylä-Kotola.
The visitors were particularly impressed by the northern lights exhibited at the Arktikum Science Centre.
During their visit in Rovaniemi, the Chinese delegation visited also two local companies, Norrhydro and Savaterra, together with Mayor Esko Lotvonen.
