Students from all over the world want to come to Lapland

5.3.2012

Already one of the most popular destinations for international exchange students in Finland, the University of Lapland is now gaining speed as a popular destination for international degree students as well. Over 200 applicants from 39 different countries have expressed their interest in pursuing master’s degrees at the University beginning in fall 2012.

The University recently held an open application round for its nine areas of master’s degree studies which attracted applications from as far away as Australia, Japan, Columbia, Jamaica, China, and the USA, in addition to numerous ones from countries in Europe and Africa. Some applicants have previously visited Rovaniemi as exchange students, most often through the European Erasmus programme, and the university is quite happy to see such desire to return.

This is almost a 14 per cent increase from last year in international degree applications for the University and a strong indicator of interest in the University’s new international degree programmes, two of which – Global Biopolitics and the European Master in Arts, Culture, and International Management (EMACIM) – are the only of their kind within Europe.

Amongst the degree studies, the EMACIM (Tourism Research major) programme received the most applicants with an exciting 60 applications. This is a very promising start to a new programme, which will see participants attending courses at the Lapland Institute for Tourism Research and Education and contribute to the honing of the University’s expertise in tourism research.

After all applications have been reviewed, the University will announce the results of its international degree student intake at the end of April, and accepted students will begin their new studies here in Rovaniemi in August. As the University of Lapland is currently preparing a new institution-wide focus on internationalization, it looks forward to bringing more highly skilled and creative international students to Lapland and supporting Rovaniemi’s already budding international and cosmopolitan reputation.

Numbers of applicants per degree area:
• Clothing Design: 4
• EMACIM (Audiovisual Media Culture major): 10
• EMACIM (Tourism Research major): 60
• Global Biopolitics: 54
• Graphic Design: 21
