All those issues are closely linked to Finland’s chairmanship priorities for the Arctic Council, including environmental protection, the enhancement of connectivity and the promotion of good education for communities living in the Arctic.

The symposium brings a great number of renowned scholars and researchers from all across the world to the Arktikum house to share research-based scientific knowledge on diverse relevant polar issues. Leading experts in the field of both Polar Law and Policies are also invited to give lectures including Lars Kullerund, Vivian Motzfeldt, Evan Bloom and Joseph Dimento.

The purpose of the annual Symposium is to examine, in detail, the implications of the challenges faced by the Polar Regions for international law and policy, and to make recommendations on appropriate actions by states, policy makers and other international actors to respond to these emerging and re-emerging challenges. This year the Symposium is hosted by the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law which is part of the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland. The Symposium will be arranged in cooperation with the University of Akureyri and the UArctic. The symposium is integrated with the bi-annual Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference, to be held on November 14–16, 2017.
