The new vice-rectors of the University of Lapland have been chosen for the term 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2024. The successful candidates were Satu Uusiautti and Soili Nystén-Haarala.

The vice-rector positions were sought internally by four persons by the deadline. The Vice-Rector for Education, Professor Satu Uusiautti, DEd, applied for the position of vice-rector for education. The applicants for the position of vice-rector for research were Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, Professor Satu Miettinen, DA; Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Soili Nystén-Haarala, LLD; and Vice-Rector for Research and University Researcher at the Arctic Centre Osmo Rätti, PhD.

By the Board’s decision, Satu Uusiautti was appointed as vice-rector for education and Soili Nystén-Haarala as vice-rector for research.

– It was an outstanding group of applicants. In the selection, the Board put weight on a strategic and future-oriented approach to the development of research or education and demonstrations of successful management of change, notes Hannele Niemi, the Board Chair.

A vice-rector’s position is a 50% administrative job performed in addition to one’s own duties. The selection was prepared by a committee appointed by Rector Antti Syväjärvi. The committee defined the relevant selection criteria, conducted the interviews, and wrote the comparison and selection memos. The selection committee submitted a unanimous proposal to the Board on the appointment of the vice-rectors.
