The University of Lapland's Art Walk will be opened on Tuesday the 22nd of March. Contemporary artworks from various collections are brought together in the University of Lapland’s spaces. Sculptures, paintings, graphic art, and other works dating from the 1970´s to the present are showcased in public spaces across campus. We want to emphasize their dialogue with the university itself, as well as with the architecture and northern nature.
The University of Lapland’s Art Walk is intended to introduce a wider audience to the public artworks permanently on display in the University’s spaces by presenting new exhibition signage and online resources and by organising workshops and guided tours. Visitors to the Art Walk can explore the artworks by taking a self-guided tour or by participating in a guided tour.
The Art Walk will add to the offerings of the University’s art galleries and introduce the public artworks on campus as a destination for both travellers to and locals of Rovaniemi. The project has been implemented by students and staff of the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design in collaboration with the Kari Huhtamo Art Foundation and the Rovaniemi Tourist Guides Association.
The Art Walk participant will encounter works from four different collections. Sculptor
Kari Huhtamo’s works form a significant part of the public artworks exhibited in the University of Lapland’s spaces since 2005. The purpose of the foundation is to preserve and make publicly available the works and other art-related material by D.A. h.c. Kari Huhtamo, and to support art education and research on northern art in general, and these activities at the University of Lapland in particular.
The Finnish State Art Commission has purchased works of art for the public spaces of the state since 1956. Approximately fifty of these works are on display on the University of Lapland’s campus. The university also periodically borrows art from the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Art Foundation’s collection in collaboration with Rovaniemi Art Museum. In addition to works from the collections mentioned above, the University of Lapland will also regularly exhibit both donated and commissioned works from its own collection.
