The University of Lapland has updated its environment programme

16.5.2024

The environment programme of the University of Lapland comprises university's environmental principles and goals, as well as the measures to achieve them. The programme has been made for the years 2024–2026.

The environment programme comprises the environmental principles and goals of the University of Lapland, as well as the measures to achieve them. In addition, it entails the systems of environmental monitoring and reporting, and information about the coordination of university's environmental activities.

Through the environment programme, the University of Lapland aims to bring clarity to the university's environmental management and to strengthen the university's environmentally responsible activities. The University of Lapland has had an environment programme since 1998, and it has recently been updated every three years.

University Researcher Osmo Rätti, Chairman of the University of Lapland's Working Group on the Environment, says that the updated environment programme includes some new measures to achieve the university's environmental goals.

"The calculation of the university's carbon footprint is established as an annual task, and we will also develop the calculation of the university's carbon handprint and nature footprint. In addition, the updated programme recommends the university to secure adequate resources for environmental work. Environmental considerations should also be discussed in connection with staff and student recruitment, student orientation and employee onboarding," Rätti states.

The update of the environment programme was drafted and approved by the University of Lapland's Working Group on the Environment. The working group monitors and develops the university's pro-environmental work and makes recommendations for actions towards greater environmental sustainability at the university.

The updated environment programme has been published on the website of the University of Lapland in both Finnish and English.
