The University of Lapland started WWF Green Office collaboration

16.5.2016

The University of Lapland strives to preserve the diversity of nature and to slow down climate change. The aim of the newly signed collaboration agreement with WWF is to reduce our environmental load and consumption of natural resources, to slow down climate change, and to promote sustainable lifestyles.

Green Office motivates the university personnel and students to reduce our ecological footprint and greenhouse emissions in daily work. Based on the agreement, the University of Lapland is to create an environmental management system (EMS) at its campus. In addition, the provisions of WWF Green Office prompt us to draw up an environmental programme and update it annually, to recycle and sort our waste, to take environmental issues into account in procurement, and to inform the students and the personnel about the practices of Green Office. We will also strive to reduce our material and energy costs, to promote our environmental awareness, and to improve the environmental image of the university.

WWF awards the Green Office logo to organizations that fulfill its criteria. To be allowed to use the logo, the university is to submit its environmental programme to WWF and successfully pass a campus inspection within one year from signing the contract. When we have met the criteria, WWF will award us the Green Office diploma and the right to use the Green Office logo.

WWF also supports us in developing the EMS, organizes various types of events, and publishes newsletters. The services provided by Green Office include the Compass web tool for disseminating information and instructions, the Climate Calculator for reducing greenhouse emissions, and the Consumer Habit Questionnaire for assessing the personnel’s environmental awareness.

Our Green Office liaison is Property Coordinator Hanne Alajoutsijärvi.

WWF Suomi launched the Green Office programme in 2002. It encompasses 162 organizations, 443 offices, and almost 64,000 employees.
