The first Christmas Experience Academy Summer School is ready to take off – exploring gastronomy, hospitality and tourism business in Rovaniemi

21.6.2018

Gathering an international learning and teaching community to Rovaniemi, the official home town of Santa Claus, the first edition of the Christmas Experience Academy Summer School will take place from 13th to the 17th August. It is organized by the Multidimensional Tourism Institute (University of Lapland and Lapland UAS) in close collaboration with local tourism companies and international partner universities.

The summer school offers a great opportunity for those who want to expand their knowledge in tourism and hospitality business, giving them the opportunity to gain solid theoretical understanding on the matter. During the summer school, participants will explore the production and consumption of tourist experiences by relying on the case of Rovaniemi and its Christmas brand. Special attention will be given to the role of gastronomy, hospitality, Arctic nature and tourism business.

PhD José-Carlos García-Rosell, leader of the Christmas Experience Academy, is proud to present a learning environment that brings together practical and academic knowledge. The summer school offers students a unique opportunity to reflect on the relationship between theory and practice. The summer school will be implemented in the premises of eight local tourism companies and the content will be taught by international scholars in a dialogue with tourism professionals. This form of collaboration with the industry not only adds value by promoting a better understanding of Christmas tourism experiences, but also can contribute to the development of more innovative business practices, says García-Rosell.

Visit Rovaniemi
is one of the main collaboration partners. Visit Rovaniemi engages in image marketing, media visits, communications and PR, tourist information and congress marketing. We are looking forward to welcome this international group of tourism students and scholars to Rovaniemi and learning about their experiences and viewpoints on our Christmas brand, says Marketing Designer Kaisa Heiskari from Visit Rovaniemi.

The summer school will count with the participation of 16 students from eight different countries and nine lecturers from different European higher education institutions. Besides the classroom activities the students are also welcomed to enjoy the arctic summer in Rovaniemi through the experiences offered in the social programme of the summer school.
