The Arctic Yearbook, published online, provides a forum for critical discussion about the current state of Arctic geopolitics and security. The Arctic Yearbook 2013 was published in the Arctic Circle Assembly on Saturday 12 October. The Editor of the Yearbook is Professor Lassi Heininen from the University of Lapland.
The Yearbook is published by the joint thematic network on geopolitics and security of the Northern Research Forum and the University of the Arctic. As the name suggests, the Yearbook is an annually published international and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed online publication. The book is meant for all those interested in the topic: researchers, students, entrepreneurs, politicians, and the general public.
Editor Lassi Heininen describes the book as a growing interdisciplinary collection of information and discussion forum that is being continuously renewed. It contains scientific articles on important and current themes and phenomena, and topical political commentaries about the Arctic region. Moreover, the book contains short briefing notes and an overview looking back on significant events of the year.
The main theme of the Arctic Yearbook 2013 is the tension between the Arctic regions and globalization. The subthemes are the Globalizing Arctic, the Arctic of Regions, Circumpolar Relations in Interesting Times, and the Arctic Resource Policy and Politics. There are 17 long scientific articles, 13 short commentaries that are more political in nature, and three briefing notes.
The Managing Editors are Heather-Exner Pirot from the University of Saskatchewan and Joël Plouffe from the University of Quebec. The international Editorial Board has e.g. Honorable President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson who wrote the Preface; the former Chair of the Arctic Council Gustaf Lind; former Vice-President of the European Parliament Diana Wallis; and Director of the Thule Institute Kari Laine. The authors mainly come from Northern and Central Europe, and North America: however, there is one Japanese author and one Chinese author as well.

The event aimed to promote discussion on changes in the Arctic regions by bringing together decision-makers in politics and business, representatives of indigenous peoples, civic organizations, opinion leaders, researchers, experts, activists, students and representatives of the media. An approximate 1,000 people participated in the dozens of sessions in the Assembly.
