28.5.2012

The fourth conferment of the University of Lapland will take place on 31 May – 2 June 2012. Traditionally, the conferment is a three-day event where masters’, doctors’, and honorary doctors’ degrees will be conferred.

In the conferment event, promovendi celebrate the end of their studies and the beginning of their new life.

The conferment event starts on the eve of the actual day of conferment, on Thursday, 31 May 2012, when the Master promovendi participate in garland-weaving and the Doctor promovendi in sword-whetting.

The conferment of academic degrees takes place in the Act of Conferment on Friday, 1 June 2012, at Lappi Arena. The Act of Conferment is led by Promoter who is, basically, a faculty professor who has the most years of service. After the Act of Conferment, all promovendi and other participants betake themselves as a celebratory procession to the Conferment Service. The conferment of Masters and Doctors is celebrated with the conferment dinner and ball.

The general public is welcome to come and see the Act of Conferment as spectators on Friday, 1 June. The audience shall be seated at Lappi Arena at 9:50 am at the latest. In addition, it is possible to see the celebratory procession to the Conferment Service which leaves from the Lappia Hall to the Rovaniemi Church at 2:30 pm (N.B. The procession will not take place if it rains). Other events are only for registered participants.

The Day of Conferment is followed by the third festive day: an informal day trip on Saturday, 2 June 2012. It is a train trip from Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi.
