University of Lapland renewed the Green Office certificate and calculated the carbon footprint
4.12.2023
This autumn, the University of Lapland has conducted an evaluation of the WWF Green Office criteria, based on which the University of Lapland's campus meets the criteria. University of Lapland's Working Group on the Environment also calculated the carbon footprint. In 2022, the university's operations produced an estimated carbon emission of 3,652 tons.
The WWF Green Office evaluation is done every three years, so the next evaluation will be in 2026. In addition to the evaluations, annual monitoring is required to maintain the certificate.
According to the Working Group on the Environment, in 2022 the biggest emission source of the University of Lapland was procurement, which covered 42 percent of the carbon footprint. The emissions from traveling and premises were the same, both 29 percent of the carbon footprint.
In 2022, the university's total emissions increased from 2021. In particular, the emissions from travel increased after the Covid-19 restrictions were eased, but they did not reach the 2019 emission level.
Emissions from premises decreased when the heat source was switched to more renewable energy. The majority of the university premises are rented from the University Properties of Finland Ltd, which compensates for the emissions for its properties.
Emissions from procurement increased slightly. As the biggest cause of carbon emissions, special attention must be paid to them in the future.
The Working Group on the Environment has started a new environmental program for the years 2024–2026. A new item in the program will be monitoring and reducing the carbon footprint. The goal is to create a program that better supports the university's needs and actions to achieve environmental goals.
