Visiting lecturer on new developments in social impact assessment

Frank Vanclay, Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Groningen, will give a lecture on social impact assessments on Wednesday, November 27, at the Arktikum House. Social impact assessments are an essential part of large-scale industrial development projects. In Finland social impacts are assessed under the environmental impact assessment required by law. Professor Vanclay’s lecture ”New Developments in Social Impact Assessment” will focus especially on new directions and developments and best practices in social impact assessment procedures.
Professor Vanclay has been interested in social impact assessment for
his entire professional career and his expertise in the field is
internationally acknowledged. He has given keynote speeches and lectures
on the topic at several universities and conferences around the world
and advanced the process which led to the development of the
International Principles for Social Impact Assessment, a widely cited
landmark document in the field.
Professor Vanclay was invited to
the University of Lapland as a guest of the Arctic Centre’s Sustainable
development research group. During his visit to Rovaniemi and the
Arctic Centre, he will be especially acquainted with the Northern
Political Economy research team. Professor Vanclay will also visit the
Thule Institute at the University of Oulu during his stay in Finland.
The
lecture will take place in the Thule meeting room at the Arktikum House
(address: Pohjoisranta 4, Rovaniemi) on Wednesday, November 27, from 2
