    Article-based dissertation Sámi Shamanism, Cosmology and Art as Systems of Embedded Knowledge by MSc Francis Joy is combined with the study of Sámi religion, culture and art brings forward an extensive and broad investigation and research topic that covers three time periods, namely prehistorical research into rock paintings in Finland and at the Alta Fjord in Norway, which have been linked is academic enquiry with a hunting, fishing and trapping culture, considered to be the ancestors of the Sámi people.

    The new book addresses different aspects of human security challenges facing the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and sub-Arctic region, including Ainu, Inuit, Nenets, Sámi and the Mongolian indigenous peoples. The book highlights the increased changes of natural and social environment and their effects on the indigenous peoples of the region, in particular on the effects concerning their unique and nature-based livelihood practices.

  • Funding from the Academy of Finland for studying power, rights and indigeneity

    The Academy of Finland’s Research Council for Culture and Society has granted 480.000 euros funding for a research project that examines changes in the ways in which power is exercised in the context of indigenous issues. The project is led by Julian Reid, Professor of International Relations, and it employs post-doctoral researchers Marjo Lindroth, Arctic Centre, and Heidi Sinevaara-Niskanen, Gender Studies.

  • Doctoral thesis: The European Union seal regime disregards a science-based approach

    The so-called commercial seal hunt as carried out on the Canadian East Coast has for many decades been labelled as cruel, inhumane and unnecessary. As a response to public pressure and campaigns to shut down the hunt, the European Union adopted a regime in 2009 effectively shutting down the EU’s internal market for products stemming from seal products other than indigenous communities. In his doctoral dissertation MA Nikolas Sellheim shows how the regime disregards a science-based approach.
