About the workshop and project

The workshop "Árran and Uvssot: Contents and visions for future Sámi education" is the last one in series of three workshops, organised by project Indigenous Pedagogy in Teacher Education (IPED). The workshop will focus on the future aspects, challenges and contents of Sámi education at different educational levels. This workshop pays special attention to the ways in which educational programs and institutions can address and solve issues and challenges having to do with 1) the creation of adequate and relevant content that can contribute to future development of Sámi education and demands of learners in minority and majority contexts 2) the need to increase Sámi linguistic and cultural knowledge, 3) the threats, possibilities and potential solutions that follow from changes in demography and society.

The online workshop will be held on 16-17 August 2021. On 16 August the workshop will be at 08.30-16.00 (UTC +2), and on 17 August it will be at 08.30-12.00 (UTC +2). The workshop times are in UTC +2 (Swedish time) - please check your local time! The workshop is open for all to participate, and the participation is free of charge.

The workshop is part of project Indigenous Pedagogy in Teacher Education (IPED), funded by Academy of Finland NOS-HS workshop grant. The project aims to review and identify the Sámi and Indigenous pedagogy research needs for northern teacher education contexts and to support new research areas' development. The series of workshops concentrates on indigenous knowledge, models, methods and content within formal or non-formal educational systems and focuses on the loss of Indigenous culture. The workshops serve both educational and informative purposes.

The third workshop is hosted by Umeå University.

The workshop will be organised online through Zoom. Participating the workshop is free of charge, and the workshop is open for all to participate. Speakers

Anna-Lill Drugge

PhD., Associate Professor
Umeå University

Anna-Lill Drugge, PhD, works as a teacher and researcher at the unit of Sami Studies, the Department of Language Studies at Umeå University. Her research interest has mainly been focused on issues in relation to gender studies, media studies, Indigenous research ethics and education. Drugge is presently working on elaborating methodological strategies that can facilitate learning practices for students and teachers that study and/or teach Sami issues. In her current guest-position as associate professor at the Arctic University of Norway she is coordinating the project “Gender in Sápmi”.

Ylva Jannok Nutti

PhD, Associate Professor, and Prorector/Vice rector
Sámi allaskuvla - Sámi University of Applied Sciences, Guovdageaidnui, Norway.

Ylva Jannok Nutti is an associate professor and vice rector with special responsible for teaching quality at the Sámi allaskuvla. She has a doctorate in 2011 from the Luleå University of Technology. Her dissertation examined teachers’ implementation of culture-based teaching in Sámi preschools and Sámi schools in Sweden using action research: work that continued with a post-doctoral fellowship but here with the focus on the end of the compulsory education in Norway. Jannok Nutti’s interests focus broadly on the field of Sámi education and its research. Jannok Nutti has a background as primary school teacher and have been working in a Sámi School in Sweden. Her work in Sámi allaskuvla focuses on the Sámi teacher education program education studies coordination and teaching tasks, and she is responsible for the Sámi Primary Teacher Education Master Program.

Hanna-Máret Outakoski

PhD., Senior Lecturer
Umeå University

Dr. Hanna-Máret Outakoski is senior lecturer in North Sámi at the Department of Language Studies at Umeå University, Sweden, and at Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø. Her latest research project investigates teaching of heritage language writing in Sámi educational contexts. One of the aims of the current collaborative research is to strengthen the position of Sámi writing among Sámi youth, and to find new models for teachers to widen the discourses of writing instruction in Sámi education. In her earlier research, Outakoski has investigated the writing processes of multilingual young writers, context of multilingual writing in Sápmi, and teacher perspectives on Sámi writing. Other research interests lie on North Sami grammar and syntax, on the possibilities and potential of using virtual worlds and virtual classrooms for language revitalization, as well as on language use in society in general.
