Teaching for Diversity and Inclusion in Arctic - the local context and global perspectives

We warmly welcome you to the local summit Teaching for Diversity and Inclusion in Arctic - the local context and global perspectives organized at the University of Tromsø, Norway, in cooperation with University of Lapland, Rovaniemi. The summit is open for teachers, teacher educators, local authorities, policy makers and researchers from Norway, Finland and Russia.

During the one-day summit, the participants will share their experiences and knowledge about the special characteristics of diversity and inclusion in teaching profession in the north.  The north is characterized with long distances and teachers often do their work in very special contexts in small communities. In addition, the increasing numbers of migrating families effect on day-to-day activities and needs for support in northern schools. The good practices of the teaching profession in the north will be discussed, and ideas and experiences exchanged and developed. These ideas will boost the preparation of a position statement of Arctic Pedagogy aiming to draw public attention to the special circumstances in education in the northern and arctic areas.

The Summit is part of the activities the Arctic Council's SDWG project Teacher Education for Diversity and Equality in the Arctic, co-led by Finland (coordinator), Norway, Canada and Russia. In addition, the summit is part of UNESCO UNITWIN network on teacher education activities.

FREE BUS TRANSPORTATION FROM ROVANIEMI TO TROMSØ

The bus leaves on Monday 7th of May at 12.00 from Rovaniemi bus station and leaves back after the summit ends on Tuesday 8th of May at 16.00. The route from Rovaniemi, Finland to Tromsø, Norway goes through Kittilä, Muonio, and Kilpisjärvi.

Deadline for signing up is 18th of April. Signing up is obligatory. Please, inform about cancellation by e-mail to satu-maarit.frangou@ulapland.fi before 30th of April. After this cancellation fee will be 30 €.

LOCATION

The Summit will take place at campus Breivika, which is the main campus in Tromsø. For the main keynote lectures we have the lecture hall in Teorifagbygget hus 6, and seminar rooms for workshops are reserved in nearby locations. Please see the map of the area here.
