The first national Conference on Sámi Pedagogy for teachers and educational authorities was held in Inari, Finland, in 2011. The conference was arranged by the University of Lapland in collaboration with the Regional State Administrative Agency of Lapland, Giellagas Institute of the University of Oulu, and the Sámi Education Institute.
In the event, speakers, participants, and others interested discussed Sámi education. Due to the success of the conference, the organizers decided to write a book that introduces the Sámi’s own analyses of the theory, practices, solutions, and challenges of Sámi education. The articles in the book are authored by several speakers of the conference.
The purpose of the book is to strengthen Sámi teachers’ role and possibilities to develop their work as teachers. The book introduces research on Sámi pedagogy. It describes the work of the University of Lapland, Giellagas Institute of the University of Oulu, the Sámi Education Institute, and Sámi University College (Sámi allaskuvla) in Sámi issues. The purpose is to enhance educational development and provide root for Sámi-pedagogical research as a part of schooling and teaching. The book serves as a bridge-maker between Sámi research and practical teaching.
The book is written in Sámi. It consists of three sections: (1) the history of the northern teacher training, (2) Sámi education today, and (3) Sámi education in the future. The book provides with ideas for new developmental and research projects.
The book is edited by Dr. Pigga Keskitalo (Ed.D.), Sámi University College, Koutokeino, Norway, and Prof. Kaarina Määttä, University of Lapland, Finland. The editors hope that this book would enhance the strengthening of the Sámi languages, culture, and education.
The book is aimed everyone interested in Sámi education and its development.
