18.6.2019

Conference event “Including the North: Indigenous Languages and Inclusion Policies in Education” was held in Arctic Science Summit Week 2019, on May 28, 2019. The event was successful and it highlighted the issues of education in circumpolar north. The event contributed to UN International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019.

In the beginning, all the panellists introduced their background and told shortly about their countries’ educational policies and practices in the context of indigenous languages and cultures.

The panel discussion focused on themes like inclusion of indigenous languages in education, challenges and possibilities to get education in indigenous languages and use them outside home, and quality of inclusive education. The audience participated the discussion by asking questions they found interesting.

The panel discussion was participated by six panellists:
Dr. Mhairi Beaton, Leeds Beckett University (chair)
Dr. Diane Hirshberg, University of Alaska Anchorage
Dr. Suvi Lakkala, University of Lapland
Dr. Gregor Maxwell, UiT The Arctic University of Norway

The book was fully edited and authored by UArctic Thematic Network members. Online version of the book is available here.

The event was fully recorded, and the recording is available online here. Recording of the book launch is available as a separate video here.
