Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos is a philosopher and full Professor of Design at the School of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo. She is deeply committed to design and social responsibility issues. She is also a scholar of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development- CNPq.

Satu Miettinen is a Dean (2018-) and a Professor of Service Design (2016-) at the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland in Finland. She has also worked as a Professor of Applied Art and Design during the years (2011-2016). She is holding one of the first academic chairs in service design. She has authored some of the first study books in service design: “An Introduction to Industrial Service Design” with Anu Valtonen “Service Design with Theory” and with Mikko Koivisto “Designing Services with Innovative Methods”. She has supervised several doctoral theses on service design and large variety of Master’s thesis related to industrial design, applied art and design, human-centered design and service design. She has worked as an expert in various national committees: The Scientific Committee for the National Audit Office, several committees at the Ministry of Finance for the development of accessible services and steering committee for the Design Finland Programme at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Satu Miettinen has worked as a visiting professor in Stanford University in USA, Tongji University in China and at the University of Trento in Italy.

Auro Lescher is a psychiatrist at UNIFESP, Psychotherapist, Coordinator of the Quixote Project. Graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of São Paulo (1988), and Psychiatry from the Federal University of São Paulo (1990). Created and implemented Non-governmental organizations: Grupo Biruta de Artes Cênicas, which through performing arts improved the quality of life of psychiatric patients and children living on the streets of the city of Santos (São Paulo), (1992 to 1995). Lescher coordinates the Quixote Project (www.projetoquixote.org.br), an institution linked to UNIFESP that assists children and adolescents at risk (abuse, violence and extreme poverty) and trains new professionals in the area. The project works mainly on the following topics: Families, youth, children, risk situations, public policies and institutional care.

Graziela Bedoian is psychologist, graduated from the University of São Paulo, in 1991, with specialization in Clinical Psychology at the Faculty of Public Health at USP, Internship CENTRE MÉDICAL MARMOTTAN - Paris, France, by COFECUB/USP, 1997 and 1999. Graziela is one of the founders of the PROJECT QUIXOTE, OSCIP linked to the Federal University of São Paulo, Dept. Psychiatry since 1995. Manager of several projects in the Quixote Project and in the Education and Research area, and in projects to prevent drug abuse among homeless children and adolescents. She has organized several publications in the area of Children and Youth in situations of social vulnerability.

Around the Global Campfire: Arts-based reflections and dialogues with youth for social transformation

SEEYouth project has collaborated with youth in Southern Finland for two years, combining socially engaged and arts-based methods, social work research and professional expertise on social sector working with youth from asylum seeking backgrounds. The youth, the researchers and the professional collaborator will present the background, context and the contents of this two-years’ journey, including two arts-based workshop weekends held in the summers 2020 and 2021 with the theme of ‘Around the Global Campfire’. ‘Around’ is a metaphor for a circular, horisontal space where hierarchies are dismantled and silences heard. ‘Global’ refers to transnational connectivity, to macro structures that shape our worlds and knowing. ‘Campfire’ symbolises – in one of the participant’s words – warmth and lightness that are the core elements of the sense of belonging. This metaphoric space build on ways and languages of creativity, communality and harmony (Mignolo, 2018), which can foster social transformation towards more inclusive and pluralistic worlds.

Enni Mikkonen (Dr.Soc.Sci) is a postdoctoral researcher in social work at the University of Lapland, Finland. She is currently studying whiteness and racialised structures in social work professionalism in the Nordic and South-Asian contexts. Her doctoral dissertation (2017) addressed social change processes in women’s position in Nepalese rural communities. She has also worked in various interdisciplinary research projects combining arts-based methods and service design with social work, particularly regarding the questions of social integration and immigration of young people. Her research interests focus on social work professionalism; hegemonic epistemologies; decolonial feminist solidarity; transnational and pluriversal social work approaches; Global South-North collaboration; ethnography and arts-based methods in social work.

Katri Konttinen (MA Arts) is doctoral candidate in art and design at the University of Lapland. She has been working in different art and design-based projects and is working at the moment as a researcher in the SEEYouth-project at the University of Lapland, Finland. Konttinen has a master´s degree in Arts and bachelor´s degree in Design. She is interested in multidisciplinary collaboration, and the different forms of dialogue arising from art and design-based actions.

Mahdi Hosseini, Dawod Noori, Davoud Hosseini and Mohammad Hosseini are students in the vocational school in Espoo, Finland. They have participated in planning and implementing the SEEYouth -project in Espoo and Rovaniemi. Their participation included for example two arts-based workshop weekends in the summers of 2020 and 2021, online meetings and workshops, as well as the project’s closing exhibition and conference.

Mikko Ylisuvanto is an advisor on multiculturalism and youth integration. He currently works at the City of Helsinki in the child protection as a project coordinator. He has collaborated in the SEEYouth project in 2020-2021.

The SEEYOUTH conference Policy Session - Youth at Risk
The session is for the SEEYOUTH conference audience and also for scholars and policy folks interested improving the position of the youth at risk of exclusion and marginalization in the contemporary, rapidly changing societies.
* How are the youth at risk regarded and responded to politically?
* What are the main risks in different (Trans-Atlantic) cities and regions? These risks can relate to youth employment, homelessness, lack of opportunities.
* Are the actions and policies possibly ameliorating or reducing negative reactions that exclude, criminalize, or render invisible this youth population?
* What is the role of art and design in this context?

Mohammad Mousa is the Programme Officer for Social and Human Sciences and Youth at the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, where he has been working since August 2019. Mohammad has a background in the NGO sector, where he has worked with various organizations here in Canada and abroad. Prior to joining the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Mohammad completed his Master's degree in Political Science, specializing in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict. Since joining CCUNESCO, Mohammad has had the privilege of working on the Commission's files related to inclusion and anti-racism, and coordinates the Commissions’ Youth Advisory Group.

Iberê de Castro Dias is a State Judge in São Paulo since 2000. Working at a child and youth welfare court at Guarulhos City since 2013, where cases involving children and juveniles removed from their homes to a safer place are judged. Trying to find ways of preventing potential and most common child and youth rights violation.

Joilson S. Santana is a collector of Recyclable Materials, Bachelor in Business Administration (UNIFACS), Master in Environmental Planning and Master in Territorial Planning and Social Development (UCSAL). Currently a PhD candidate at PPGTAS/UCSAL, member of the GamDes/UCSAL research group. And coordinator of social and environmental projects and solidarity economy at the NGO Centro de Arte e Meio Ambiente - CAMA.

Esmeralda Ortiz is a writer, singer and journalist. She wrote her first book of poesy with support from the Quixote Project when she was 17 years old. Now, she is an author of many books and released a CD of Samba - Brazilian popular music. She also gives musical lectures in several cities in Brazil and in some countries. As a journalist, she works for TV Globo.

Engaged audience: Rosie Macpherson is a founding member and Artistic Director of SBC. She leads on SBC’s day-to-day activity, direction and ensure they are always best placed to serve our communities. She is a writer with a passion for politics and sees this job as all about creating platforms for different people across the country to say what’s on their mind.

Prof. PhD. Mônica Moura is a researcher, teacher and coordinator of Bachelor’s Degree in Design, and Researcher @ LABDesign - Laboratory of Contemporary Design: Systems, objects and culture from The São Paulo State University (UNESP), at the School of Architecture, Arts, Communication and Design (FAAC),where teaches disciplines such as Design Project, Graphic Workshop and Contemporary Design, in the Postgraduate Program in Design as master's and doctoral advisor and postdoctoral supervisor.

Lucas Fúrio Melara is currently in the Master in Design of the Postgraduate Program @ the School of Architecture, Arts, Communication and Design (FAAC) from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), Bachelor of Product Design. He is a researcher in the @ LABDesign - Laboratory of Contemporary Design: Systems, objects and culture. In his professional career, Lucas advocates for the 17 SDGs by the UN 2030 Agenda, since 2014, where he currently does so as Chief Designer of LM & Company.

Nina Luostarinen is a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Lapland, Faculty of Arts and Design. Both her artistic work and research interest address playful interaction with places that deliver visual mementos. The objective of her endeavors is to reveal the narrative and emotional layer of places. Luostarinen works at Humak University of Applied Sciences with projects of the Cultural Management department.

Mayara Kise Telles Fujitani is a designer and post-graduate student from the University of São Paulo. Researches Popular Education and Design along with popular groups within the Solidarity Economy. Experience in Solidarity Economy, Cooperativism, Popular Education and Project Management besides acting as a designer and educator along with social movements.

Martin Balaz (Mgr.art., ArtD.) is engaged in research and development in the field of transport and product design. He leads a studio, based on independent intellectual design development at Faculty of Architecture and Design, Slovak University of Technology and teaches action centric subjects, focused on imagination and expression and the inter-faculty module of synergistic strategy in design. Together with his graduate student Erik Rejta (Bc.), they create the design project Star Status.

Rafael Szafir Goldstein is currently an undergraduate Design student at the School of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), Brazil. For the SEEYouth Project he had a junior researcher role from April 2020 to September 2021. Nowadays he is working with social media and product consulting for small companies.

Dr Rosana Aparecida Vasques is a lecturer at the School of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), Brazil, teaching industrial and service design at the Department of Project. She is also a research fellow for both the SEEYouth Project and the InovaUSP, a multidisciplinary environment dedicated to the development of research and innovation.

Étienne Levac is a master candidate at the Université du Québec à Montréal in indigenous and gender studies at the department of Religious Sciences. He is currently collaborating with the Atikamekw Nehirowisiw community of Manawan on various projects around knowledge transmission dynamics and responsibilities with the land.

Originally from the Atikamekw community of Obedjiwan, Karine Awashish set personal and professional goals for herself related to the cultural and identity-based affirmation of Indigenous communities. Holder of a master's degree in recreation, culture and tourism (UQTR) and a bachelor's degree in business administration (UQAM), she is currently pursuing doctoral studies in sociology at the Université Laval (Vanier Scholar). Her research interests include cooperation, social transformation and contributions of Indigenous knowledge in the social sciences. With her accumulated professional experience related to the socio-economic development of the First Nations in Quebec, she is actively involved in the development of the social economy. In 2015, she co-founded the Nitaskinan solidarity cooperative.

Jean-François Vachon works in cultural mediation through digital technologies. His research interests lie in the areas of self-representation, the teaching of creative processes and contemporary communication tools. At La Boîte Rouge VIF since 2003, he is involved in the development of innovative projects with intergenerational groups.

In this talk, Paul Cooke will discuss his work on the ‘Changing the Story’ project, working with marginalised young people across the world to explore post-conflict experiences through participatory filmmaking. He outlines the opportunities for empowerment and agency, specifically as the project has developed and where the stories and their making have been a focus for reflection and for identifying ways for creating positive change. The talk also introduces approaches for youth-led impact and evaluation - where sharing (or mirroring) is at the heart of projects with ambitions for genuine or meaningful participation.

Paul Cooke is Centenary Chair of World Cinemas at the University of Leeds. He is the author of Representing East Germany: From Colonization to Nostalgia (2005) and Contemporary German Cinema (2012). His edited volumes include World Cinema’s ‘Dialogues; with Hollywood (2007), The Lives of Others and Contemporary German Film (2013), with Marc Silberman, Screening War: Perspectives on German Suffering (2012) and with Rob Stone, Screening European Heritage: Creating and Consuming History on Film (2017). He is currently involved in an AHRC project exploring the role of film as a tool for the generation of ‘Soft Power’ across the BRICS group of emerging nations. Over the last few years he has run a number of participatory filmmaking project supporting young people to explore the legacy of ‘difficult’ pasts. This has involved working with the former main Stasi prison in Germany and groups of young people from Germany and the UK to explore the legacy of the GDR for our contemporary understanding of democracy, and young people in Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Johannesburg looking at the legacy of holocaust and its implications for our contemporary understanding of human rights. In addition to Changing the Story, Paul’s current projects involve working with marginalised groups in South Africa, Brazil and India to use filmmaking as a tool to challenge their nation’s ‘Soft Power narratives’, and working with public health professionals to use participatory arts to develop community-led solutions to the misdiagnosis of antibiotics in Nepal.

Paul Wilson is a Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Leeds. His research explores the intersections of language, landscape, community and communication and has a particular focus on typography, typographic design and the cultural impacts of technologies of linguistic production. He am particularly interested in the potential for critical and speculative methods as disruptive approaches to research-design perceptions of everyday life and the power of storytelling and narrative to creatively engage community and place. HIs current research involves the production of designed narratives of community and place and, in particular, investigates the potential for critically-engaged typographies and language-acts, focusing on sites of class experience and situated knowledge at moments or points of change or transition. Much of his research orbits ideas and ideals of utopianism found in manifestations of the utopian action, and has resulted in a broad range of activities: surveying the noticeboards found in the interior landscapes of Working Men’s Clubs; mapping the route of the march which marked the closure of Britain’s last deep coal mine; exploring the post-Brexit significance of the Esperanto-English dictionary held in Keighley Library, West Yorkshire.

Arundhati Prasad is a design professional with a background in advertising and a strong interest in social impact. She hosts a podcast called ‘Designed for Good' which explores how creativity can bring a positive change in society. Designed for Good has touched on themes ranging from design for social advocacy and oral history to conservation & AI tracking — hosting eminent personalities such as Fatima Bhutto, Suchitra Vijayan, Aanchal Malhotra and Scott Starett to name a few. Most recently Arundhati has been involved in independent research projects related to safe community spaces and hyper local waste segregation. Élise Bourgeois-Guérin is a psychologist and an assistant professor in mental health at TELUQ University. As a clinician, she has worked in community settings, notably with people suffering from psychosis and with homeless people. Her research interests include transcultural psychology, violence (both suffered and perpetrated) and social marginalisation processes.

Joséphine Aldebert is a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Montreal. Her thesis subject is on impulsivity and identity disturbance in personnality disorder and her research interests include radicalization processes. As a clinician she worked with youg children, adolescents and adults in community and public settings.

With a first career in medias and communication, Gaëlle Saules is studying psychology at UQAM University. Her research interests include youth development and mindfulness.

Heidi Pietarinen is a professor in the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland, Finland. She holds a PhD degree in textile design and her research has emphasis on knowledge and methods of textile art, bioart and art-based research. Her research includes projects and working groups such as the Future Bio Arctic Design, High Altitude Bioprospecting and BioARTech Laboratory, which include biochemists and artists. Pietarinen is also curious about the narratives and multiple cultural influences told by textiles.

Ph.D. candidate, Amna Qureshi is a researcher at the Faculty of Arts & Design, the University of Lapland, Finland. She holds a master's degree in Multimedia Arts (Distinction) and a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication Design (Graphic Design) both from the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan. Her experience in teaching design to undergraduates at the same university goes back a decade. In her doctoral research, Amna is interested in exploring factors such as the search for identity, conformity, desire to be heard, communication, and the interpretation of the youth of the Arctic city of Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland. Her research interests are artistic incorporating arts & design education experiments which will contribute to the H2020 funded research project Acting on the Margins: Arts as Social Sculpture (AMASS) at the University of Lapland, Finland.

Gustavo Curcio, designer, architect and journalist, Postdoc and PhD in Design by FAUUSP, is researcher and professor at Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo, FAUUSP. Curcio is the coordinator of the group of Graphic Design disciplines, vice-president of the International Office and vice-coordinator of the Industrialization Laboratory at FAUUSP. Member of Design Award Jury of the Brazilian House Museum (Museu da Casa Brasileira), Member of Taipeis International Design Award Jury (TIDA 2021) and Member of the Editorial Team of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers IFI, he is the scientific director of ArqXP.com, Design and Architecture magazine and website.
