Three NordForsk fundings for Arctic Centre researchers

NordForsk, a subsidiary of the Nordic Council, has granted funding for nine Arctic research projects, three of which involve researchers from the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The total funding received by Minna Turunen, Timo Koivurova and Florian Stammler is almost 900,000 euros.

Scientific community and science funding agencies commit to cooperation on accelerating the sustainability transformation

Dissertation: Social Licence to Operate of Mining at the Societal Level

In her doctoral dissertation, M.A. Pamela Lesser examines how the social licence to operate (SLO) of mining functions at the societal level. The research shows that societal SLO is actually not important for the local acceptance of a project and only has some influence in combination with local factors. The research corroborates that site level factors matter more to local communities and the public than do broader debates around societal benefits and costs.

Seminar on the impact of the sustainability transitions on Arctic transport

How sustainability transitions can affect transport and mobility systems in the Arctic region, especially in Lapland? This topic has been studied by a research project carried out at the Faculties of Law and Social Sciences at the University of Lapland. Suomen Akatemian kulttuurin ja yhteiskunnan tutkimuksen toimikunta myönsi rahoituksen seitsemälle Lapin yliopiston tutkimushankkeelle. Lisäksi biotieteiden, terveyden ja ympäristön tutkimuksen toimikunta myönsi rahoituksen yhdelle hankkeelle. Lapin yliopisto sai rahoitusta yhteensä 3 674 388 euroa.

Research to Enhance Democracy through Aesthetic and Embodied Learning – the University of Lapland coordinates EUR 2.7 million project

The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Lapland coordinates the project of six universities, which has been awarded 2.1 million euros of EU Horizon funding and 630 000 euros of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding. The purpose of the international AECED project is to enhance awareness, appreciation and understanding of democracy as lived and embodied experience, and to develop pedagogies to support this.
