New Book in Sámi Studies Illuminates the Diversity of Sámi Worlds

A major contribution to Sámi Studies, The Sámi World presents a diversity of research topics from across Sápmi, providing rich and multifaceted understandings of Sámi worlds. The book has been edited by Sanna Valkonen, Professor of Sámi Research, and researchers Áile Aikio, Saara Alakorva and Sigga-Marja Magga from the University of Lapland. Written in English, the book is arranged around Áilu Valle’s rap lyrics.

The 23rd International Summer School in Social Work at the University of Lapland has started!

About 65 students, teachers, and researchers from 11 different countries gather at the International Summer School in Social Work to discuss social work and social services from global perspective. The summer school is organized by the unit of Social Work at the University of Lapland in collaboration with the Skidmore College (US) and FHV Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (Austria). The summer school takes place at the University of Lapland from 23 May to 4 June 2022.

Studies offered to Ukrainians free of charge

The University of Lapland supports Ukranian nationals by offering them studies for free. Ukrainian refugees in Finland may engage in Open University studies until 2023 or apply to the university for a non-degree right to continue their studies. Both options are offered to Ukranians at no cost.

Grant from Suomen ulkomaankaupan edistämisrahasto awarded to Joonas Ervasti

In spring 2020 Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE, the Finnish foreign trade promotion fund), the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement with an aim to support master’s theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. In the second cooperation application period, Joonas Ervasti from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland was rewarded for his thesis in management that explores the utilisation of design thinking in supporting the international growth of Finnish companies.

In its organisational meeting, the new Board of the University of Lapland nominated Professor Hannele Niemi, research director, as the Chair for another three years. MSc Olli Väyrynen, vice president, business development at Finavia, was nominated as the Vice-Chair. The term of the Board started on 1 January 2021 and ends on 31 December 2023.

MSW Roberta Motiečienė’s dissertation is based on the stories of child and family social workers in Lithuania. The country has been independent for only thirty years, which has significantly influenced the development of social work practices. Lithuanian society, following a neoliberal model and stressing individualism and efficiency, has high expectations of family social workers while advocating the rights of children and families. Family social workers are facing difficulties caused by structural problems in society and they are expected to abide by work ethics while lacking external resources.
