I am acting as professor of criminal law at the University of Lapland. My research activities have dealt with international and transnational crimes, trafficking in human beings, sexual offences and corruption, for instance. Criminal law is not a part of welfare law but has close connections to it. Lack of welfare – marginalization and other social problems – is an important factor affecting the occurrence of crime at the society. Therefore, criminal law alone is not enough when dealing with crime. Regardless of whether we consider the matter – crime and its causes and consequences – from the point of view of offenders, victims or society as a whole it is clear that criminal law needs alongside it also legislation and actors of the social sector.
