Sámi National Day Week is celebrated at the University of Lapland with Sámi short films

In celebration of Sámi National Day Week, three new Sámi short films will be screened at the University of Lapland on Friday 9 February at 2 pm in the Esko and Asko Hall. The event is open to everyone and free of charge – welcome!

The films are screened in cooperation with the SuMu research community of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Lapland and the Skábmagovat Indigenous Peoples’ Film Festival.

The films are in Sámi and subtitled in English. After the films, the University of Lapland will serve coffee with cake in front of the lecture hall.

The duration of the film event, including coffee, is about 90 minutes.

Fishing has been a part of Sámi culture and identity in Utsjoki ever since time immemorial. When the new Fishing Act banned fishing on their home river, the Sámi protested by fishing without permits and then turning themselves in. The time had come to assess constitutional rights.
