Hot work

When performing hot work, you must follow the safety instructions, and the work must be supervised and guarded appropriately. Before starting to work on a temporary hot work site, you must fill out the relevant authorisation forms. In order to perform hot work, you are to have a valid hot work certificate.

You must also follow smoking instructions, and ashtrays must be fireproof. Candles can only be burned with the responsible person’s permission and always on a non-flammable surface. No other separate permit procedure is needed for burning candles.

What is hot work?

• Work that produces sparks
• Work that involves the use of a flame or another source of heat
• Work that causes a fire hazard

The types of hot work are performed at the university

• Teaching-related metal cutting and design using a gas torch or mechanically in workshops and studios
• Various lab tests done by heating materials over an open fire
• Disinfecting equipment with fire at the student health centre
• Work done by Property Management employees and external maintenance companies in connection with maintenance work and renovations
   
  

Permanent hot work facilities at the university

• Metal workshops used for instruction in the Faculty of Education (Yliopistonkatu 8) and in the Faculty of Art and Design
• Chemistry and physics lab in the Faculty of Education (Yliopistonkatu 8)
• Metal workshop in the Faculty of Art and Design (Yliopistonkatu 8)
• Technical work room at the Training School (Pohjolankatu 23)
• Workshop in the exhibition premises of the Arctic Centre (Pohjoisranta 4)

Temporary hot work sites

• All other areas than the ones above are temporary hot work sites used when fixing and servicing buildings and equipment.
• A separate hot work permit is required for each instance of hot work on a temporary site (as part of the contract), and the workers and fire watches are to have a valid hot work certificate.
   
  

 Safety instructions and their binding effect

• When performing hot work, you must follow the instructions "Hot Work" and “Katto- ja vedeneristystöiden tulityöt” (Roofing and Waterproofing Work).
• If the instructions are not followed, compensation may be reduced or rejected in accordance with the Insurance Contracts Act.

Responsibilities pertaining to hot work and hot work facilities

• The Faculty Councils permit hot work in the permanent facilities as part of confirming work plans and curricula.
• A fire inspector has approved the university’s hot work facilities, and they have been constructed and equipped for hot work.
• Teaching personnel must acquaint themselves with hot work and fire safety instructions, and students must be given the relevant instructions and information before starting hot work.
• Group sizes must be planned and confirmed in such a way that teachers and their assistants are able to supervise and guide their students’ work.
• No separate personal hot work permit is needed in facilities used for teaching.
• Those working in the workshops of the Arctic Centre’s exhibition premises are to have hot work permits.
• In each area of responsibility, the teacher and the assisting chief laboratory technician are in charge of guarding hot work. In the Arctic Centre this is done by forepersons. The fire watch stays in position for at least one hour after the work has been completed.
• ISS facility management services are in charge of the primary fire extinguishing equipment in a hot work facility. Hot work facilities have appropriate primary extinguishing equipment and first aid supplies. A hot work facility must have at least two hand-held extinguishers (12 kg, A-BIII-E) with fire rating 43A 183BC, of which one may be replaced with two extinguishers (6 kg, A-BIII-E) with fire rating 27A 144BC.
• The teacher and the chief laboratory technician are in charge of the condition of the tools in a hot work facility. At the Arctic Centre, forepersons are in charge of these tools.
• The teacher and the chief laboratory technician are in charge of the safeguarding and order of a hot work facility. At the Arctic Centre, forepersons are in charge of them.

Save yourself and others

• Pay special attention to people with disabilities.

Report the fire

• Press a fire alarm button (placed on the walls of the hallways and indicated with signs). If you are not close to a button, ask someone else to sound the alarm.
• Call 112.
• Call the facility officers’ number 2206 or 040 861 7866.

Extinguish the fire, if possible.

• However, do not put your health at risk.

Prevent the fire from spreading.

• Close all doors and windows.

When exiting the building

• Lock your computer and close the doors and windows of the room, if possible.
• Take your personal valuables and outdoor clothes with you, if possible.
• Follow the instructions given by the safety organisation of the university.
• It is forbidden to use the elevator during a fire.
• Go to the nearest meeting place, where you will get further instructions.
