Main building

The University of Lapland sits in a beautiful natural setting near Harjulampi, a scenic pond connected to the River Kemijoki. The architecture of the University of Lapland is designed by Juhani Katainen Architects, and the campus development process was executed in phases between 1987 and 2006. The vicarage of Rovaniemi formerly stood on the site that is today the location of the university campus, and the cultural and historical heritage of the site lives on in the names of many of the interior spaces of the university.

In the university main building you will find all of our faculties, our versatile teaching and learning spaces, the Lapland University Consortium Library, most of our administrative services, eight galleries and two restaurants. The university guest accommodation facilities are located in the immediate vicinity of the main building.

The Fellman Hall

Our most spacious lecture hall, the Fellman Hall, has been named after Jacob Fellman (1795–1875), a botanist, an avid researcher on Lapland and a collector of Sámi folklore. Fellman was born the son of Esaias Fellman, the first vicar of Rovaniemi, and he himself later (1820–1831) served as vicar in Utsjoki in the northernmost area of Finland.

The Esko and Asko Hall

The Esko and Asko Hall has been named after Esko Riepula, the first rector of the University of Lapland, and Asko Oinas, the former Governor of the Province of Lapland, in honour of their work contribution to the establishment and advancement of the University of Lapland. Esko Riepula served as the rector of the University of Lapland from 1979 to 2006.

The Castrén Hall

The Castrén Hall has been named after Matias Aleksanteri Castrén (1813–1852), a linguist specializing in the Uralic languages, an ethnographer and an explorer.

Born in Tervola, not far away from Rovaniemi, Castrén spent his childhood in the Rovaniemi vicarage. During his expeditions across Finnish Lapland, northern Russia and Siberia he recorded and documented the life, customs, religions and oral traditions of the peoples he encountered. He was a pioneer of linguistic fieldwork and ethnography.

The Eeli Hall

The Eeli Hall has been named after Provost Veli Eliel Laitinen (1883–1952). Laitinen was the last vicar of Rovaniemi living in the vicarage that formerly stood on the site that is today the location of the university main campus. In Rovaniemi he was called "Priest Eeli", and it is precisely this popular version of his name that is reflected in the choice of name for the lecture hall.

The Kaarina Hall

The Kaarina Hall has been named after Professor of Educational Psychology Kaarina Määttä in honour of her career in teaching, research and administrative work spanning over four decades at the University of Lapland.

The Mauri Hall

The Mauri Hall has been named after the second Rector of the University of Lapland, Professor of Media Studies Mauri Ylä-Kotola. He served as the Rector of the University of Lapland from 2006 to 2019.

In addition to the large lecture halls, the university facilities include over 40 smaller lecture and seminar rooms, auditoriums, and group work and meeting spaces.

Agora and F-Hub

The Agora – the main lobby of the F-wing of the university main building – and the F-Hub study space lying adjacent to the Agora and separated from it by a glass wall, are versatile, multi-functional spaces designed for various activities.

In the Agora, you have the possibility to dine in the restaurant Petronella, but the space is also well-suited for studying, or simply spending time on campus, visiting art exhibitions in the galleries, and you might even get a chance to hear some pop-up live music.

The F-Hub includes more spaces suitable for group work, self-study, and spending time on campus. Our students have a 24/7 access to the F-Hub with their student key fob.

Library

The Lapland University Consortium Library expert services are designed to support studying, learning and teaching at the University of Lapland and at the Lapland University of Applied Sciences.

The library users have access to numerous Finnish and foreign databases as well as ca. 510,000 e-books and 85,000 e-journals. The library's collections include ca. 174,000 print books and the library subscribes to ca. 140 print journals.

In addition, the library premises include reading rooms, group work spaces, and a possibility for printing and copying. The students and staff of the ULapland and Lapland UAS have a 24/7 access to the library with their key fobs.

ARCTA – Arctic Art & Design Labs

Our art and design students can benefit from access to our versatile Arctic Art & Design Labs during their studies. We also offer the spaces for organizations as development and testing environments for product development and design projects.

Learning and teaching spaces for art and design

We have a range of special learning and teaching spaces for students of art and design and teacher training: different kinds of studios and laboratories, editing and sound recording facilities, artists' studios, workrooms, workshops, a darkroom, IT facilities and music classrooms.

Electronic exam environment

The university uses the electronic exam system EXAM, which allows students greater flexibility in taking exams. The EXAM spaces are located opposite the Library and their total seating capacity is 25.

We participate in shared use of EXAM, which means that students of other Finnish universities may reserve a place and complete their exams in our EXAM facilities, and students of our university may take their exams in the equivalent EXAM facilities of other participating universities in Finland.

Spaces and places on campus

When you need to take a break from your hectic day, you will find many relaxing spots on campus. The Agora is a popular spot for students. The F-wing of the main building also has several coffee rooms and meeting spaces for students, and the student associations have their own spaces in the basement floor of the D-wing. Behind the Fellman Hall, there is a space designated for quiet reflection.

At the University of Lapland, you can also discover nature right on the doorstep. On one side, the campus is bordered by a small forest and a scenic pond Harjulampi, where you can enjoy the seasonal beauty of nature all year round, for example by doing the Wellbeing Forest exercises.

On-campus guest accommodation

There are on-campus guest accommodation facilities in the immediate vicinity of the university main building. We reserve and rent these spaces primarily for short-term use by Finnish and international visiting lecturers, scholars and teachers.
