About Art and Design studies
In the Faculty of Art and Design the studies for exchange students are organized as ca. 30 ECTS credit study modules in following fields of study:
Art Education
Audiovisual Media Culture
Clothing Design
Fine Art and Cultural Studies
Graphic Design
Industrial Design
Interior and Textile Design
The modules were created to
- inform applicants on the studies at the planning stage of the exchange;
- to guarantee students 25 - 30 ECTS credits of studies per semester
- to avoid overlapping in course timetables;
- to reserve exchange students places in workshops and courses with limited number of students.
If you apply to the Faculty of Art and Design you need to choose the field of study, e.g. study module. Your Study Plan for Learning Agreement should mainly be based on the respective module’s courses. The relevant faculty department will make the decision on your acceptance based on your previous studies, study plan, portfolio and motivation.
In case that only some of the chosen module’s courses are relevant for you, please choose courses from the faculty’s study offer or from university’s other faculties or units. This might lead to overlapping of the course timetables. See the study offer here: www.ulapland.fi/courses. Please note, that in most courses of the Faculty of Art and Design there is a restricted entry. The teahcer needs to check each choice individually in regard to the number of the places available and whether the student possesses required knowledge and skills for accessing the course.
Alternatively you can apply to study 25-30 cr. non-degree programmes offered in English. See www.ulapland.fi/courses

- Gender studies
- China: Domestic, Global and Arctic Trajectories
- Intercultural Communication
In the modules of interior and textile design and in clothing design, as well as in some courses in other modules exchange students are integrated to the classes where majority of the students are Finnish. Thus the language of instruction is also Finnish. In such situations exchange students will get individual tutoring by the teachers and the studies are supported by literature, presentations and exercises in English.
Graphic design studies are open for exchange students only for autumn semester or for the whole academic year.
If you are planning to work mainly independently on your artistic production or on your master’s or doctor’s research, you are free to build your own study plan for the exchange period. However, access to courses with a course size limit will be dependent on the availability of free places and whether you meet the prerequisites. Information on free places is available prior the start of the course. Please note: Individually created study plans may also lead to overlapping classes. We are happy to assist to with planning of your studies.
Please remember that acceptable completion of a course requires at least 80 % attendance to exercises. In fine art subjects at least 90 % attendance is required.
