English is the official language of the conference. There is no interpretation available.
Costs and conference fees
The conference program is free of charge for the registered participants, but each participant has to cover their own travel and accommodation fees. Unfortunately, no grants are available to support participation of those with limited resources of their own.
Conference venue
University of Lapland, located at the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, is the northernmost University in the EU. It was founded in 1979 and has four faculties and two multidisciplinary research institutes. The University’s key research area is Arctic and Northern research, approached from the perspectives of people, society, education, law, the environment as well as art and design. The conference takes place at lecture halls and workshop rooms located at the University of Lapland main campus, (Yliopistonkatu 8, 96300 Rovaniemi). It is located about two kilometres, or 20-30 min walk from the city centre.
The city of Rovaniemi is the vibrant capital of Lapland. Rovaniemi, called the Gate of Lapland. With a land area of 8016 km2 it is Finland’s and Europe’s largest town, with a population of over 60,000. This small but modern city offers a unique combination of urban services and the beautiful natural environment of Lapland, and is located at the junction of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers.
Accommodation
The conference does not have a designated hotel booked for all quests, so each participant is free to choose his or her own accommodation. Rovaniemi is a busy winter tourism city, so during the conference time, considered off-season for most tourism operators, there is a great variety of accommodation options available from luxury hotels, cabins and hostels to AirBnB flats or rooms. Restaurants and cafés
The university campus has several restaurants. Restaurant Felli is situated next to the main lobby (C-wing) and Restaurant Petronella in the Faculty of Art & Design (F-wing). In between these is Café Lovisa (D-wing) which serves café, tea and snacks. Restaurant Petronella has the longest opening hours (7:45-22:00), in case you arrive early or wish to stay at the university after the program ends. It also has a bar. Across the road there is a small grocery shop called Sale. In the city centre there are restaurants serving food from the Chinese, Indian, Italian and Mexican cuisines to genuine Finnish and Lappish flavours.
