Story-making Toolset:
The story-making tool is a flexible dialogical and arts-based toolset that uses a complex combination of at least two methods. One method is arts-based, using any form of visual or performing art to express complex social phenomena by the research participants. The arts-based method should be selected with the participants’ creative interests in mind and ideally concluded within 60-90 minutes. Probing kits should be used to ensure participants have all the necessary materials to stimulate their active participation. The second method is a creative dialogical activity that overlaps the arts-based method. For this part of the story-making tool, the literary arts can provide useful tools and approaches, for example, creative and poem writing or a short 50-word writing activity. Storytelling and focus group discussions also offer the potential for documenting the participant's ideas and reflections on their artwork or performance. The arts-based and dialogical tools are then analysed and compared using a visual analysis and a comparative grid to understand how the story and the art relate as they reveal the deeper meanings of the participants’ reflections and expressions.
