The art program of the event includes exhibitions, concerts and performances. Mosts of the art program will be produced by the art institutions and organizations in Lapland in collaboration with their Arctic partners. NORDTING / The Northern Assembly

a nomadic people’s parliament of the North
a party for the periphery
a separatist movement for the Arctic colony.

With an ambition to question and change both the present narrative of the North and the power regime of the North, The Northern Assembly has the last years traveled extensively in the arctic region. With the help of marching bands, stockfish, Powerpoint and political analysis, 32 people´s assemblies have been held. Tonnes of t-shirts have been sold. Gallons of vodka have been drunk. Songs have been sung, prayers have been made and people have voted for independence of the North - time and time again. The North is an area with classical colonial traits. Political and economic power is located far away, always in the south. The economic and developmental discourse is describing the land as an ´arctic frontiér´; an area between the civilization - which is behind you – and the unknown - which is in front of you; a liminal zone, a tabula rasa, a land of possibilities for conquerers and investors. It is time for the people of the North to fight back.

With this first visit to Finland, The Northern Assembly is entering the next step in the battle for a pan-arctic ideology. Is the Arctic Arts Summit ready for a United North? Rovaniemi is yet another arctic hotspot that allows us to investigate the living paradoxes of the North, and a perfect site for a NORDTING.

The assembly in Rovaniemi is lead by Amund Sjølie Sveen, with the assistance of Erik Stifjell and Liv Hanne Haugen.

Piste Collective is Rovaniemi based union of artists producing high quality and distinctive contemporary circus, dance and theatre performances. Members of the collective share a passion for creating art and performance events, and developing art education in relation to their communities. They perform nationwide and internationally. Piste Collective has nineteen members, and in the Summit they collaborate with their Arctic partners. You will see their performances as part of the Policy Day, city reception, Dialogue Day and dinner at Valdemari. Artists are presented here.

Solju

Solju is the band playing after the dinner on Wednesday 5. June 2019. Their soundscape ranges from the expansive wilderness of the tundra to the most intimate lávvu fireplace. The music can be described as vivacious, colourful, earthy, ethereal, and genuine.

Solju is formed by Ulla Pirttijärvi and her daughter Hildá Länsman, who combine their heritage of northern Sámi language and traditional chant, known as yoik, with a desire for new and innovative music. Solju provides a dialogue of traditional and modern Sámi culture. Solju is proud of their indigenous roots and want to show it to the world. Sámi culture and identity lie at the heart of the music, reflecting mythology and aspects of the traditional lifestyles of their homeland.

Quantum Tangle

Fusing of old-world sounds and new-world flair, Greyson Gritt, Tiffany Ayalik, and Inuksuk Mackay are embracing their blended backgrounds. Combining their talents of throat singing, haunting melodies and traditional legends, the JUNO award-winning group are excited to present a mix of flavours from across Northern Canada. As Ayalik charismatically embodies stories through song, Gritt infuses them with a soulful blues, while Mackay provides the percussive landscape, creating an experience that consumes the senses.

The Arctic Soiree of Ruska Ensemble - Theatre across the Arctic

Ruska Ensemble is a Finnish group of performing arts founded in 2010. The group wants to create theatre that breaks walls between fields of art, brings people together and gets its inspiration from a person as well as from a community.

The group is concerned about the ecological and cultural future of the Arctic region. Therefore it wants to create a platform where indigenous people are brought together and everyone has a chance to speak up their mind in their own disappearing language. The aim is to strengthen our identities and to find alternative ways to approach and perceive the world. The focus is on the future of the Arctic people and their Northern environment.

Ruska Ensemble's first production was a collaboration with Kokkola City Theatre, The Last Morning Star (2011). The first part of a trilogy handling Arctic matters, Áillohaš - The Son of the Sun premiered at The Finnish National Theatre in 2014. It was a collaboration with The Finnish National Theatre and the Norwegian Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter. The second part of the trilogy is called Arctic Odyssey and it premiered at The Finnish National Theatre in 2017. Collaboration was in between The Finnish National Theatre and the Greenlandic national theatre, Nunatta Isiginnaartitsisarfia. The third part of the trilogy will see daylight in 2020.

To Arctic Art Summit 2019, Ruska Ensemble brings northern traditions from the different sides of the northern area: Shamanviolin of Tuomas Rounakari, Greenlandic Mask Dance of Connie Kristoffersen and Chukchi Throat Singing of Anra Naw create together The Arctic Soiree of Ruska Ensemble combining memorable bites of Ruska Ensemble's works. All the three artists performed in Arctic Odyssey the performance which has been performed both in Finland and in Greenland.
