Sámi cultural heritage search service name selected by international competition

The Sámi archive materials can soon be searched through a new digital search service. The name for the new search service, Nuohtti, was chosen through an international competition, where the public were invited to present suggestions.

Feelings of Nature is a group exhibition that highlights the Northern nature relationship. The exhibition reflects the growing concern for the environment, current environmental activism and the everyday but deep connection of nature that Northerners have. The artists of the exhibition are based in Lapland and work at the Faculty of Art and Design in the University of Lapland in the fields of arts education and applied visual arts.

New book: Arts-Based Methods for Decolonising Participatory Research

The new international Master’s degree in service design

The new international Master’s degree in service design, "the Service Design Strategies and Innovation" (SDSI) envisages to kick off in the Fall 2021. The new programme focuses on interdisciplinary studies and cross-specialisation in design, business, technologies and social sciences. Graduates will be awarded with a Master’s double degree, one from the University of Lapland and one from the Art Academy of Latvia.

Doctoral Dissertation: Emotional skills for service designers in co-creation practices

Service designers often act as facilitators in co-creation workshops, and they need specific skills to ensure a positive participant experience. The facilitator needs to be capable of creating a sense of togetherness and optimizing interaction in order to allow the flow of collective creation. The study by Mariluz Soto, MA, aims to broaden our understanding of emotions in service design processes and presents three essential skills that help facilitators in their work.

The number of couples who find themselves in a long-distance relationship is increasing for a wide range of reasons. For example, the current outbreak of COVID-19 has kept numerous loved ones apart. M.Des. Hong Li argues that there is a gap between research-based knowledge of the needs of long-distance relationship couples and the practical solutions actually available for them. Her study contributes to bridging this gap by mediating emotional communication through unconventional user interfaces that use interaction solutions outside of the scope of their conventional use.

The research grant applications of the Service Design Research Group (CO-STARS) achieved significant success during Spring 2019. Two of the European Commission Horizon calls under the programme H2020 Transformations were successful and are currently in the grant preparation process. The research group received funding to the amount of 3 million Euro for the project titled “Acting on the Margin - Arts as a Social Sculpture” (AMASS).
