    Studying different laws comparatively raises many fundamental theoretical issues, which are dwelled onto by Emma Patrignani in her recently completed article-based dissertation. Ideas drawn from neighbouring disciplines, such as philosophy, social sciences epistemology and anthropology, are made to interact with law: in this case the conception of otherness, the understanding of pluralism and the meaning of context are studied as basic theoretical issues that determine the methodological choices of the comparatist. The thesis advances an attitude toward comparativism as an academic endeavour that embraces complexity theory and that reflects on its own epistemological status.

    The 10t Polar Law Symposium in Rovaniemi focuses on global and local governance of the Polar Regions

    The 10th Polar Law Symposium will be held in Rovaniemi, Finland on November 13-14, 2017. This year the symposium will focus on the issues of the global and local governance of the Poles and it will include panel sessions concerning the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the protection of the environment, the rights of indigenous peoples and the issue of cyber and digital security in the Polar Regions.

    Dissertation: Differences between member states’ constitutions translate into unequal influence on the development of the European Union

    The primary treaties of the EU state that member states are equal before Union law. Yet, as Tomi Tuominen demonstrates in his dissertation, some national courts are in a better position than others to engage with the Court of Justice and thus to influence development of the Union. Mr Tuominen finds the reasons for this disparity in the differences between the constitutions of the member states.

    Wolters Kluwer has released “3D Printing, Intellectual Property and Innovation: Insights from Law and Technology” edited by Rosa Maria Ballardini, Marcus Norrgård, Jouni Partanen. This is the first book to discuss 3D printing technology from a multidisciplinary perspective that encompasses law, economics, engineering, technology, and policy.

    Hundreds of thousands Rohingya refugees are fully outside from all the aid schemes and are fallen on a continuous threat of food insecurity in the Bangladesh border. There is an emergency needs of protracted displacement of Rohingyas in Asia and create sustainable strategy for rethinking Rohingya issues. The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, Finland and the Faculty of Law at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh will organize common human rights seminar September 2016 in cooperation with several human rights institutions and Universities in Bangladesh to disseminate knowledge and best practices among a wider audience.

  • Doctoral thesis: The European Union seal regime disregards a science-based approach

    The so-called commercial seal hunt as carried out on the Canadian East Coast has for many decades been labelled as cruel, inhumane and unnecessary. As a response to public pressure and campaigns to shut down the hunt, the European Union adopted a regime in 2009 effectively shutting down the EU’s internal market for products stemming from seal products other than indigenous communities. In his doctoral dissertation MA Nikolas Sellheim shows how the regime disregards a science-based approach.
