Finnish Foreign Trade Promotion Fund: Grant awarded to Miira Lehto, a student of tourism research at the University of Lapland

The Finnish Foreign Trade Promotion Fund (SUE), the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement in spring 2020 with an aim to support master’s theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. Following the autumn 2021 application round, the grant was awarded to Miira Lehto’s thesis that explores the discourses of sustainable luxury in tourism.

The University of Lapland's Art Walk will be opened on Tuesday the 22nd of March. Contemporary artworks from various collections are brought together in the University of Lapland’s spaces. Sculptures, paintings, graphic art, and other works dating from the 1970´s to the present are showcased in public spaces across campus. We want to emphasize their dialogue with the university itself, as well as with the architecture and northern nature.

New UArctic Chairs appointed

Professors Kamrul Hossain, Timo Jokela and Tuija Turunen are appointed as the UArctic Chairs for the next five years in Arctic legal research and education, Arctic art, design and culture and Education for social justice and diversity.

The Annual Celebration of the University of Lapland was organized on Tuesday the 1st of March. The alum of the year, the teacher of the year, the student community of the year and the doctoral dissertation of the year were awarded. Furthermore, the rector’s award was presented and the medals awarded by the President of Finland on the 6th of December 2021 were given. Staff members with long careers at the university were also awarded.

In the autumn of 2021, the Board of the University of Lapland decided to allocate EUR 1.25 million to the strategic choices of the research as part of the university strategy implementation plan. For the funding application organized at the end of 2021, 14 high-level applications from various faculties and units of the university were submitted. Five were awarded funding.

Ayonghe Akonwi Nebasifu, M.A., studies in his dissertation the unequal power relations between officials and local people in the co-management of the Mount Cameroon National Park and its adjacent communities. Ayonghe’s work contributes to co-management theory by revealing simultaneous compliance with and opposition to various relations of power in which people use official and unofficial strategies to attain their goals within a system of resource management.

The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC) audited our quality system on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2021. By decision of the Higher Education Evaluation Committee on 16 February 2022, the University of Lapland has been awarded a quality label for a period of six years.

Vice presidents for education outlined on the development of entrance examinations and scoring of certificate-based admissions

Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. The development work will be discussed at universities during the autumn.
