The Strategic Research Council (SRC) established within the Research Council of Finland has granted significant funding for WaterFall consortium. The University of Lapland’s share of the funding in the first phase is 389.560 euros.

New International MA degree in Arctic World Politics is launched with five online lectures in November – December 2024

In 2025, University of Lapland will launch its highly popular MA degree programme in Arctic World Politics as an international degree taught in English. In relation to this, the professors involved in the programme offer a series of five open online lectures which explore current themes and approaches in Arctic World Politics and give a glimpse at their ongoing research.

University of Lapland to provide 25 000 euros of additional annual support for students' Wellness pass

University entrance exams to be reformed in 2025 – application to several fields of study made easier

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

The Ethical Guidelines for Research Involving the Sámi People in Finland are informed by the ethical principles of research with Indigenous peoples. The purpose of the guidelines is to promote culturally safe environments and ways of working in the context of conducting research. The guidelines are available online in Finnish, North Sámi, Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi, and English.

The work of visual artists is changing: The University of Lapland is a partner in an education project

The socio-economic status of visual artists is low, and their work is often project-based. Technological developments require artists to be innovative. New digital platforms and artificial intelligence in the visual arts require artists to have project management and digital skills. The Expanded Field of Visual Artists' Income and Work (KUVATA) project, implemented by Tampere University of Applied Sciences, the University of Lapland, and Globe Art Point, addresses these new skills needs.

Entrance exams for universities will be renewed in 2025 – universities are currently reviewing a draft of the new entrance exam model

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

The Alum of the Year, the Teacher of the Year, and the Student Group of the Year were awarded at the 45th annual celebration of the University of Lapland on 28th of February. In addition, the Dissertation Award , Award for Science/Art Communication and Rector’s award were presented. At the celebration, the decorations and medals awarded by the President of the Republic of Finland on December 6, 2023, were given, and those who had worked long at the university were honored with badges of merit.

Ten honorary doctors to be promoted at the University of Lapland

Altogether ten honorary doctors will be conferred in the sixth conferment of degrees held at the University of Lapland between 13 and 18 May 2024. An honorary doctorate is the greatest recognition that a university can bestow on a person.

Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP) is the new international partner of the University of Lapland – the collaboration started from the INCLUSION research project

The University of Lapland and the Peruvian Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP) have signed an Erasmus+ ICM mobility agreement. The agreement originated from the collaboration between the University of Lapland and PUCP in the INCLUSION research project. At the end of January, the INCLUSION project organized in Peru an intensive course, which was also attended by researchers and students from the University of Lapland.
