  • New EU project examines Arctic climate change, economy, and society

    The Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland participates in the EU project called Arctic Climate Change Economy and Society (ACCESS). ACCESS will evaluate the impacts of climate change on economic sectors such as fisheries, oil and gas extraction, and marine transportation. Dr. Anna Stammler-Gossmann is coordinating the socio-economic impact assessment on the fishery sector and related economic activities in the Barents region.

  • Arctic Centre exhibition on black gold fever

    Arctic Centre opens a new exhibition on 9th of December in the Arktikum-house, in Rovaniemi. The Arctic Black Gold exhibition tells about our current oil usage and oil consumption. It also tells about the current focus on the Arctic region as a future oil reserve and what this will mean for the northern communities.

  • Dr Keith Devlin lectures on the video games in mathematics education

    Executive Director Dr Keith Devlin from the Stanford University H-STAR institute will give an open lecture on the use of video games in mathematics education. The lecture takes place on Friday, the 2nd of December, at 10–11 am, at the lecture hall 2 at the University of Lapland.

    The annual meeting of Nordic researchers and teachers of legal informatics is held at the University of Lapland on November 23–25. This year the conference discusses the challenges of communication in the public sector, as well as the effectiveness of data protection in the network society.

  • The Northern Research Forum assembles in Iceland

    The 6th Open Assembly the Northern Research Forum will be held in Hveragerði, Iceland, from the 4th to 6th of September 2011. The overall objective of the Assembly is to address the impact of dwindling ice – terrestrial as well as ocean bound – on the complex interface of nature and society in all climatic zones of the world, with an emphasis on the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Himalayans.

  • Baby Mammoth Found in Siberia

    A carcass of a baby mammoth has been found in the northern Siberia, says Natalia Fedorova, head of a museum in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. If proven well-preserved, it is a third this kind of discovery in the world. The news was told to an expedition of the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and Northern Cultural Institute (Finland), which is currently visiting Salekhard, Siberia. The news is also published in the local media.

  • New Publication on Resettlement Policy in the Russian North

    A new Arctic Centre research publication by political anthropologist Elena Nuykina shows that resettlement policy in the Russian North has been a top-down process, leaving limited space for regional interference. Russian northern relocation projects stand for a policy which considers population groups as passive elements "moved by the state" due to economic, military and geopolitical interests. However, the study shows that proactive northern residents have their own strategies to seek better living conditions for themselves and their families, using creatively the state’s relocation programmes for their own interests.

    The anthropology research team of the Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi headed by Florian Stammler was successful with an application to the Academy of Finland for a major research international project. The research council for society and culture awarded 600 000 euros for a project called Orhelia.
