Organisation of doctoral education at the University of Lapland

At the University of Lapland, doctoral studies can be completed in four faculties in the fields of education, law, social sciences, and art and design. Faculties grant doctoral study rights and doctoral degrees. Doctoral researchers at the University of Lapland belong to one of the faculties, and in addition, to one of the two doctoral programs.

The doctoral school of the University of Lapland supports the university's faculties in organizing researcher training. The doctoral school is led by the vice-rector responsible for research, according to the division of duties between the rectors. Researcher education at the University of Lapland, including doctoral programs and doctoral school, operate under the guidance of the steering board for the university's doctoral education.

Steering board of doctoral education

The University of Lapland steering board of doctoral education develops, coordinates and aligns common principles and processes regarding education leading to a doctoral degree at the university level, based on national and European principles and standards guiding doctoral education. The board takes care of the entirety of researcher training, good practices and quality and, if necessary, clarifies the division of labor and responsibility issues between the doctoral school, faculties and other actors. If necessary, the board assembles task-specific work groups to take care of, for example, doctoral program recruitments, curriculum work and feedback processing.

The tasks of the steering board are:

1) coordinate and steer the Activities of the Arctic in a Changing World -doctoral program and discipline-specific doctoral program
2) develop and unify the university's doctoral training planning, implementation, monitoring and quality management
